Behavioral Health History

Animation and Interactive Timeline/Map
A few details
SAMSHA needed to train a range of healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, social workers) across the U.S. to understand the role behavioral health plays in preventing substance abuse to vulnerable people. They needed a way to introduce large amounts of historical content while keeping learners engaged throughout the process.
How we solved it
We immediately grab the user’s attention and incentivize the learning content to come. We did this through a creative animation at the beginning of the lesson that uses characters to explain the importance of behavioral health. This draws the learner in and peaks their curiosity to learn more about the topic.
What the users see
We moved into the content by allowing the learner to view educational material through an interactive timeline and map in which the learner is able to explore pivotal moments in behavioral health history while linking those moments in history to their geographical location.
Guiding the user
By allowing the learner to interact with the given content in multiple ways it keeps the learning fresh and the user engaged throughout the
module.
Part of the approach was to review the history of behavioral health and substance abuse in an effort to show links between the two throughout world history.
We worked with the client to create accurate storyboards which were vetted extensively before we started the development process.
The program allows the learner to draw their own connections between time, geography, and behavioral
health which stimulates a deeper learning in the participant.
